SWAN’S ISLAND (AP) — A Maine scallop fisherman faces charges after allegedly dragging for scallops in an area with a critical underwater power cable that supplies electricity to the 330 year- round residents of Swan’s Island.

Jef f Nichols, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Marine Resources, says Marine Patrol officers charged Lucas Lemoine with multiple violations, the most serious of which is dragging in the cable area.

If found guilty, he faces a $500 fine, up to a year in prison and a one-year suspension of his scalloping license.

Sgt. Troy Dow tells the Portland Press Herald the 33-year-old Lemoine could have damaged the power cable, a “life line” for the island.

Lemoine was also charged with dragging in a closed area, dragging at night, possession of undersized scallops, and operating without navigation lights.
