
The Polar Bears improved to 5-0, while the Lyons dropped to 2-3.
Beecher added two assists to go with her four goals while also scooping three groundballs in the win. O’Connor had two groundballs in addition to her four scores. Taylor Wilson did a little bit of everything for the Polar Bears, scoring two goals, assisting on three others and earning five draw controls. Lindsay Picard also scored twice and had three draw controls for Bowdoin.
Julia Bell led Mount Holyoke with three goals while Charlotte Wagner had two.
Isabel Sippel made two saves in goal for Bowdoin while Isa Rodriguez made 21 saves for Mount Holyoke. Bowdoin held a 45-11 advantage in shots, and the Lyons committed 32 turnovers. Genna Warner led Bowdoin with three caused turnovers.
The Polar Bears were to play St. Lawrence today at 10 a.m.
Basketball honors
BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin College senior Sara Binkhorst has been named the New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) Player of the Year in selections announced on Sunday.
Binkhorst was joined by junior teammate Shannon Brady as a NEWBA First Team All-Region selection.
A two-time First Team All- NESCAC selection, Binkhorst capped a sensational career by averaging 14.4 points, 3.2 assists and 1.1 steals this season while connecting on 85.4-percent from the free-throw line and 41.5- percent from 3-point range. She surpassed 1,000 career points earlier this season and finished with 1,075 in her career to sit 11th all-time at Bowdoin.
Binkhorst also set a program record with seven 3- pointers in a victory over Bates on Feb. 13, and her 145 career treys are fourth alltime at Bowdoin.
Brady continued to establish herself as one of the top forwards in New England following a campaign that saw her average 14.3 points to go with 6.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. She led the Polar Bears in scoring on 13 occasions and reached double figures in 25 of Bowdoin’s 30 games while connecting on 51.2-percent of her shots from the field.
The Polar Bears finished the year with a record of 25- 5, reaching the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Women’s tennis
Bowdoin fell just short against Pomona-Pitzer in a battle of the top-10 teams as the Sagehens escaped with a 5-4 victory.
The eighth-ranked Sagehens topped the sixthranked Polar Bears after taking a 2-1 lead into singles play.
The match was decided by a three-set battle at No. 6 singles as Emily Kuo battled back to secure her team’s win.
Bowdoin’s point in doubles play came out of the No. 3 pairing of Pilar Giffenig and Tiffany Cheng. The duo swept their competition with an 8-0 win.
The two teams split singles play, as the Polar Bears captured wins at No. 1, 2 and 5. All three victories came in straight sets, beginning with Joulia Likhanskaia at No. 1 (6-2, 6-3) and Cheng at No. 2 (6-2, 6-3). Samantha Stalder accounted for Bowdoin’s fourth point with a 6-3, 6-3 match at No. 5.
Softball
The Polar Bears split a Sunday doubleheader against Western New England and Endicott, dropping a 4-1 decision to the Golden Bears before bouncing back with a 9-6 win over the Gulls.
Bowdoin (5-3) opened Sunday with an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first against Western New England after stringing together consecutive singles from Katie Gately, Adriane Krul and Nicole Nelson. Nelson’s hit to center field allowed Gately to score.
The Golden Bears answered with a four-run second, taking the lead and wrapping up the scoring offense of the game for either team.
Emily Griffin allowed four runs on the rubber for Bowdoin, with a pair of strikeouts and walks. On the opposite end, Heidi Grieger matched Griffin in allowing seven hits and struck out a pair.
Bowdoin responded with a nine-run offensive showing against Endicott in the nightcap. After allowing a run in the top of the first, Bowdoin put up a pair in the bottom half to take the 2-1 lead. Gately’s single loaded the bases for Cielle Collins, who singled to center field, driving in Griffin from third and Julia Geaumont from second.
The Polar Bears drove three more across the plate in the fourth. Krul’s double to right field put her in scoring position for a Gately single to center. Collins again put the ball in play as Geaumont, who had walked earlier in the inning, came around to score followed by Gately.
The Gulls put four on the board in the top of the sixth, evening the score at 5-5, but Bowdoin responded with a four in the bottom half. Krul came around first, scoring off a Geaumont single to center, quickly followed by Ali Miller, who ran for Geaumont. Collins drove Miller home with a double to center. Marisa O’Toole followed with a double of her own, bringing Collins around from second, crossing home soon after to push the score to 9-5.
Baseball
Bowdoin won its second straight game with a 16-9 rout of Babson on Sunday.
The Polar Bears scored seven runs in the top of the first and never looked back.
Cole DiRoberto had three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs to lead the Bowdoin offense. Sean Mullaney, Buddy Shea, Tom Wells, Evann Dumont- LaPointe and Nick Sadler added two hits apiece as the Polar Bears pounded out 17 hits.
Erik Jacobsen took the mound win, going seven innings on 15 hits, six earned runs and five strikeouts.
Jacob Weiss had three hits for Babson (2-2).
