SNAP-Ed, an educational component of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is calling local chefs and amateur cooks to take the challenge.
To enter, the healthy recipe must cost less than $10 to feed a family of four, take 30 minutes or less to prepare, be low-fat and low-sodium, use fewer than 10 ingredients and include at least three of the following: low-cost lean protein, fruits and vegetables, low-fat or fat-free dairy, and whole grains.
Email recipes and a photo of the final product to mainesnap [email protected]. The deadline for submissions is March 31. The winner “will receive statewide recognition and may even get a chance to prepare the recipe on TV,” according to a news release about the contest.
Call Maine SNAP-Ed at 221-4560 or ACCESS Health, a local Healthy Maine Partnership, at 373-6958 for more information. For details, visit www.maine.gov/dhhs/ofi/snaped/ 15_ snp_ 0894_ recipe_ challenge_ flyer_ 0305_ OUT.PDF

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
