CLERMONT, Fla. — Meghan Hayes registered eight strikeouts to lead Babson College in an 8-0, six-inning decision over the University of New England on Thursday at the Dot Richardson Spring Softball Games hosted by the U.S. National Training Center.
The Beavers (8-4) and Hayes limited the Nor’easters (4-6) to four hits and a pair of walks before walking off with the win in the bottom of the sixth.
UNE had more hits (3-2) than Babson through four innings, as Katelyn Austin, who recorded Big Blue’s first single, kept pace with Hayes from the UNE circle. The Beavers edged in front during the home half of the fourth on a solo home run by Leslie Moore.
Samantha Smith produced a two-run homer to start a four-run fifth for Babson. Lindsay Schmid began the sixth with a solo shot, and after another run came across, Caitie Benoit put a two-out single into left-center to plate Madison Dinaso for an 8-0 cushion.
Earlier in the day, Bridget McGrail hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to cut into a six-run deficit, and Framingham State University scored once in each of the next three frames to pull out an 8-7, extra-inning win over UNE.
Abby Lambert took the loss for the Nor’easters, as she gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits over five innings. Kelly Murphy had three hits and two RBIs for UNE at the plate.
