Freeport and Brunswick police were involved in a low-speed chase Tuesday morning that turned out to be the result of a medical condition.

Brunswick police were alerted at 5:15 a.m. by Freeport police that a Lincoln Town Car was going north on Interstate 295 at 35 mph. Several drivers called to report that the car was being driven erratically.

The car’s driver did not pull over when police turned on their emergency lights and siren, and Brunswick police deployed a spike mat, which slowed the car from 35 mph to 10 mph, said Cmdr. Marc Hagan.

The driver got off the highway at lower Pleasant Street and drove onto side roads until he crashed into a snowbank, police said. The driver continued trying to drive the car, so an officer had to smash the window and turn the car off, Hagan said.

Police learned from the 57-year-old man’s family that he suffers from a type of dementia and hadn’t driven in years. They didn’t know why he chose to drive a car Tuesday.

There were no charges or injuries. Police did not release the name of the driver.
