The Scarborough Land Trust has hired Theresa Galvin, of Cape Elizabeth, as its new part-time stewardship coordinator. She will work with volunteers, contractors and community partners to create and maintain trails, protect wildlife habitat and preserve open space on land trust properties.

Galvin’s first priority will be developing a Neighborhood Stewardship Group for the newly acquired Benjamin Farm property, according to Kathy Mills, executive director of the land trust.

“Theresa brings a terrific background to this needed position,” Mills said in a press release. “Once we purchase land, our work has just begun, as we must care for our properties in perpetuity. Recent acquisitions have greatly increased our land holdings and Theresa is excited about working with community volunteers to help care for SLT properties in their neighborhoods.”

Galvin also works as a project manager with the York County Soil and Water Conservation District and previously worked with an environmental consulting firm in Portland. While living in California, Galvin was a habitat restoration manager for the Save the Bay organization in San Francisco.

She also holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences from Queens College of the City University of New York. Funding for Galvin’s salary has been provided, in part, by the Horizon Foundation and the Morton-Kelly Charitable Trust, Mills said.

The Scarborough Land Trust was founded in 1977 and has conserved more than 1,300 acres for public benefit. It has also created trail networks on four of its properties, which are free and open to the public year round.
