Annie Norman and Riley Simon, fifth-graders in Elaine Moore’s class at Pownal Elementary School, were the top students in the school’s Pi Day celebration on March 14. Norman memorized 140 digits of pi while Simon was first, with 198. Students measured several circular objects in order to understand that pi is the number derived when the circumference is divided by the diameter. They also held a contest to see who could measure the most digits of pi. This year’s Pi Day (March 14) was special in that the date and time represented the first 10 digits of pi. Courtesy photo
