BIDDEFORD — The Super Sub Shop, at 69 Jefferson St., has been robbed for the second time in four weeks.

Police say at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Michael A. Constabile robbed the sub shop, making off with cash and cigarettes. “He did not brandish a weapon to the clerk,” Biddeford Deputy Police Chief JoAnne Fisk said in an email Friday.

The robbery comes on the heels of a mid-March robbery of the same sub shop. According to a post on the Biddeford Police Department’s Facebook page, Michael Barnhart, 28, of Westbrook, robbed the Super Sub Shop on March 15. Barnhart was arrested and charged for the crime four days later, the post states.

But as quickly as police apprehended Barnhart, they nabbed Constabile even quicker ”“ in just two minutes to be exact. “The call came in at 8:34 (p.m.) and he was in custody at 8:36 (p.m.),” said Fisk.

After the robbery was reported, Fisk said Patrol Officer Derek McDonald spotted Constabile riding a bicycle downtown and realized he matched the description of the robber given by a sub shop employee.

McDonald made contact with Constabile, who then dropped his bicycle in the area of King and Hill streets, before taking off on foot, said Fisk. But after McDonald commanded him to stop, Constabile did so voluntarily, she said.

The 25-year-old, whom police describe as a transient, was arrested on an active warrant as well as charges of robbery and refusing to submit to arrest. Fisk said Constabile is also Biddeford Police’s only suspect in three other robberies, which have occurred at the Red Rocket Smoke Shop, at 80 Birch St.

Constabile was taken to the York County Jail in Alfred. He appeared in Biddeford District Court Friday afternoon, where his bail was set at $2,500, according to a court official.
