FREEPORT
Freeport residents and businesses will be able to buy solar at steeply discounted prices thanks to 12 families who signed early contracts as part of the Solarize Freeport program.
By signing their contracts prior to March 28, the 12 participants were recognized as “Solarize Freeport Sunrisers” and secured the lowest pricing tier for themselves and other Freeport property owners who elect to install a solar energy system this summer as part of the program.
Solarize Freeport encourages local property owners to install a solar energy system between May and October of this year. Those who sign a contract prior to noon on May 2 will qualify for bulk pricing — the driving force behind lowering the cost of solar energy systems in Freeport. More than 170 residents of Freeport have already signed up to receive a free estimate for installing solar power for their home through this program.
Carla and Ron Dupuis became the first official Sunrisers when they signed a contract in early March to install a solar electric system on their home. With the steep decline in the price for solar equipment and the buying incentives through Solarize Freeport, the payback for the Dupuises will be just under 10 years.
“We looked at installing solar seven or eight years ago, and it would have been a 30-year payback,” said Carla Dupuis. “When we looked at the current pricing through Solarize Freeport, the investment made a lot of sense.”
“Solarize Freeport is all about making it easier and cheaper for regular people to make the change to clean, natural, sun-powered energy,” said Freeport Town Planner Donna Larson.
Larson said she hoped the community would be responsive when she introduced to the model to the community in November.
