In response to a letter “Maine is called No. 1 welfare state in the country” in the readers forum on April 10, and submitted by Lorraine Paquin, of Springville, it appears that rather than fact checking her statements, Ms. Paquin spends too much time listening to and believing Paul LePage.
I would encourage Ms. Paquin to reference www.usgovernmentspending.com, which provides a breakdown of the local and state welfare spending in each state. In reality, 44 states spend more local and state dollars in support of welfare than Maine. Is it safe to assume that a good number of the 48 percent who voted Paul LePage into office are unable to research such information on their own?

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
