Ultimate Frisbee Club offered

Scarborough Community Services if offering a co-ed Ultimate Frisbee Club this spring for kids in grades 6-8. Everyone plays and no experience is necessary. Club runs, 5:30-7 p.m., from Tuesday, April 28, to June 12 at the Wentworth School field. The cost is $55 per child. ‘Dirty Dancing’ trip to Boston

Cape Community Services is offering a trip to the Colonial Theater in Boston on May 2 to see “Dirty Dancing.” The cost is $135 per person for transportation and theater tickets. Or just hitch a ride to Boston for the day at a cost of $35 per person.

A motor coach will leave from the Scarborough exit of the Maine Turnpike, Exit 42. The trip includes a stop at Quincy Market for shopping and lunch before the show. See www.capecommunityservices.org or call 799-2868 to sign up or for more information.

Cape sets hazardous waste collection date

The town of Cape Elizabeth will hold a Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Collection Day, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., on Saturday, May 9, at the public works building on Cooper Drive.

Participants are encouraged to bring any leftover hazardous waste items from their yard, garage and home, including pesticides, gasoline, upholstery cleaners and much more. Dropoff is limited to Cape Elizabeth residents.

Prohibited items include, but are not limited to, medical waste, ammunition, fireworks and any items containing freon. Record Store Day at Bull Moose

In celebration of Record Store Day, which will be held on Saturday, April 18, the Bull Moose stores in Maine will offer several special events, which are free and open to the public.

The Scarborough Bull Moose will offer an in-store performance by Murcielago at 2 p.m. In addition, Mark Curdo, from WCYY, will be hanging out spinning tunes and geeking out with customers.

Morrison Center to hold plant sale

The Morrison Center at 60 Chamberlain Road in Scarborough will hold its annual Spring Sale in the Greenhouse on May 14 and 15 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. The sale will feature an assortment of geraniums, houseplants, orchids, bedding plants, hanging plants, and unusuals.

Proceeds from sales in the greenhouse will benefit the center’s Seedling Program, which provides adults with disabilities the opportunity to grow plants and sell them to the community all year long.

‘A Funny Thing Happened…’ at Lyric Theater

The musical “A Funny thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” opens at Lyric Music Theater in South Portland on Friday, April 17, at 8 p.m.

The show, which runs through May 2, is a non-stop musical laugh-fest and romp through Rome with desperate lovers, scheming neighbors and secrets behind every toga.

The show tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door.

A winner of Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Book, this Broadway farce is witty and irreverent, according to the theater’s website.

Land Trust to host plant sale

The South Portland Land Trust will be holding its annual plant and bake sale on Saturday, May 16, at the American Legion Hall at 413 Broadway in South Portland. A variety of annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, wildflowers, groundcovers, etc., will be available for sale, as well as baked goods and coffee.

The sale will open to land trust members at 8 a.m. and to the general public at 9 a.m. The sale will continue until 1 p.m.

The land trust is seeking donations of plants and garden-related items from individuals and/or businesses and is seeking volunteers willing to dig and transplant donated plants and/or help on the day of the sale. Contact Helen Slocum at 408-1039 or email her at [email protected] for information.

Historical society seeks volunteers

The South Portland Historical Society is looking for a few volunteers to work in its gift shop this season, as well as a docent to cover the 10 a.m.-1 p.m. shift on Sunday. Art students showcase work

Art students graduating from Southern Maine Community College this spring will showcase their work at 3fish Gallery in Portland from April 21-25.

During the SMCC Senior Art Exhibition, nine students will exhibit photos, paintings, drawings, sculptures and other artwork. The show is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m. daily.

Nonesuch Books taking part in Bookstore Day

Nonesuch Books in South Portland and Biddeford will be celebrating the first national Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday, May 2.

The store will be featuring exclusive merchandise carried only by participating independent bookstores. A limited number of free publisher tote bags will be given out during the day.

The highlight of the day will be a book signing in each Nonesuch store with two local authors.

Monica Wood will be at the Mill Creek store in South Portland from 1-2 p.m.

Michael Chase will be at the Biddeford Crossing store from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Other fun activities are being planned.

Nonesuch Books has been in business for 15 years, and is locally owned and operated.

Library offers shredding day

On Saturday, April 18, 9 a.m.-noon, the South Portland Public Library will hold a community shredding day in the parking lot. Bring personal documents and paperwork for safe and secure shredding, by Without A Trace mobile shredding. This event is free and open to the public.
