I am writing to thank my legislators Sen. Linda Baker and Rep. Denise Tepler for standing up for the health of Mainers. Sen. Baker and Rep. Tepler cosponsored LD 948 to fix problems in Maine’s chemical safety laws.
Recently I have learned of a class of chemicals called phthalates (pronounced “Thal-ates”). Phthalates make plastic durable but flexible and are found in everything from vinyl flooring to raincoats to nail polish. Mountains of scientific evidence link toxic phthalates to very serious problems ranging from reproductive birth defects to lowered IQ and learning disabilities to asthma.
Unfortunately, manufactures don’t have to disclose when their products include this class of toxic chemicals.
Thankfully, this bipartisan bill solves this problem and will give parents the information they need about phthalates and other toxic chemicals to protect their families.
I see it as our duty as parents and childcare owners to make sure our children get the best start on life that they can get. Keeping them safe from toxic chemicals is the first step. I am glad that our local legislators feel the same.
