New Britain, Conn. — The Sea Dogs (5-7) managed a split of Tuesday night’s doubleheader against the New Britain Rock Cats (7-6), losing game one 4-0, but rebounding with an 8-1 victory in the nightcap. The Sea Dogs are now 2-4 on their seven-game roadrip, which ends today.

Game 1

The Rock Cats scored four times off Justin Haley (0-2) in the fourth inning to win their fifth straight game, all at home, beating the Sea Dogs 4-0.

New Britain lefty Ryan Carpenter (1-2) earned his first Double-A win, retiring the final 14 batters faced in his first career complete-game. The lefty allowed just two hits on back-to-back singles by Blake Tekotte and Tim Roberson. Carpenter walked one, fanned seven and threw only 87 pitches.

Justin Haley (0-2) took the loss for Portland, giving up 4 runs on 4 hits over 3 1/3 IP on 3 walks, 3 hit batters and 3 strikeouts.

New Britain loaded the bases in the fourth inning with one out and received a two-run single by Juan Ciriaco. The third run scored on a second baseman’s error and Tyler Massey followed with a run-scoring single to left.

Kyle Martin had a solid outing in relief for Portland. The first-year Sea Dog worked 2 2/3 scoreless on 3 hits and 3 strikeouts.

Game 2

Portland returned the favor to New Britain in Game 2, scoring four times in the first inning, and taking the nightcap 8-1. Reed Gragnani and Blake Tekotte delivered two-run doubles in the first off losing pitcher Gus Schlosser (1-2).

Robby Scott (no-decision) was outstanding in just his second start in 90 outings in the Red Sox system. Scott worked four innings without allowing a run on 3 hits, no walks and 4 strikeouts. Simon Mercedes (1-0) earned his first Double-A win, working three innings, giving up one unearned on 1 hit, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Jantzen Witte gave the Sea Dogs a 5-0 lead in the second inning with a sacrifice fly ”“ his team-leading 11th RBI of the season. The second inning would be the last for Schlosser, who gave up 5 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.

Witte would continue his torrid pace to start the season, driving home two runs with a single in the fourth inning off Jason Gurka. The Ft. Worth, Texas native went 1-for-2 with 3 RBI and one walk, but has 13 RBI in just 11 Double-A games.

Carlos Asuaje reached base four times with 2 singles, a double and a walk. Oscar Tejeda, who played with Portland in 2011-12, drove home the eighth run with a double in the fourth.

The Sea Dogs and Rock Cats (Rockies affiliate) wrap-up their three-game series on Wednesday morning beginning at 10:35 a.m. Righty Luis Diaz (0-0, 2.89) takes on left-hander Carlos Hernandez (0-0, 4.63).
