WELLS — Dr. Donald Edward Holdsworth, 87, of Drakes Island, Wells, died April 30, 2015 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Donald was born Oct. 26, 1927 in Springvale, the only child of Thomas and Gertrude Hey Holdsworth. He graduated from Sanford High School and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine at Orono. He then earned his M.D. from the University of Vermont in 1956.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army in Korea. On June 4, 1960, Donald married Camille Mary Kulas.
Donald did his residency at Hartford Hospital in Connecticut, where he met his beloved wife, Camille. He later started a private practice in Brookline, Massachusetts. He spent many hours working at the Robert B. Brigham Hospital in Boston, where he participated in research in rheumatology and immunology. He co-authored several articles on rheumatoid arthritis. He took great joy in being a friend and physician to his many patients throughout his long career.
He later continued his medical career at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he also chaired the Board of Quality Care and Risk Management. Donald also enjoyed his days teaching at Harvard University Medical School.
Donald enjoyed times spent with his family and always took an active role in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He loved the beach, and in particular Drakes Island.
He was an avid tennis player. He loved spending his winters in Florida playing golf with friends and his wife, Camille. He was an avid fan of the New England Patriots and enjoyed watching games with his children. He was a proud member of the Springvale Masonic Lodge #190 A.F. & A.M. and a member of Kora Shrine.
He is preceded in death by: his step-grandson, Justin Donovan.
Donald is dearly missed by: his loving wife, Camille; his daughters, Deborah Frazier and her husband Lawson of Framingham, Massachusetts, Linda Holdsworth Donovan and her husband Drew of York, and Pamela Fischer and her husband John of Scarborough; his son, David Holdsworth and his fiancée Meredith Sheldon; and six grandchildren, Elizabeth Frazier, Caroline Frazier, Andrew Fischer, Allison Donovan, Colin Fischer, and Katherine Donovan.
Friends may visit from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5, at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. A Masonic service will be held the same day at 7 p.m. The service and burial will be private.
