BRUNSWICK — It’s always a tough day at the plate when a team faces one of the premier pitches in the league, but when a team has to confront two superior pitchers in the same game the opportunity for success becomes even more complicated. Skyler Cassan and Cordelia Stewert combined on a one-hit shutout as the Bangor High School softball team came away with a 16-0 Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference win over Brunswick (1-4) on Monday.

The Dragons opened the game on an encouraging note as the Rams went scoreless in the first inning. Allie Eck led-off for the Dragons with a perfectly executed bunt for a base hit. Eck stole second and third base, but was stranded there as Cassan struck out the heart of Brunswick’s order with three consecutive punch outs.

Bangor grabbed the lead in the top of the second inning as Lilli Wiseman reached base on a walk and scored on one of several Brunswick errors. Bangor went up 2-0 after three innings, but the Rams took advantage of several walks and errors from there to pull away for the Mercy Rule win after five innings.

Cassan and Stewert combined for 12 strikeouts. Sydni Cosgrove had a double and a triple to lead the Ram offense. Brunswick committed six costly errors to compound the defensive challenge against Bangor.
