HARTLAND — Two people escaped serious injury when the float plane they were in flipped over during an attempted landing on Great Moose Lake in Somerset County.
Sheriff’s Deputy Joseph Jackson says the pilot, 53-year-old Kenneth Comfort, of Palmyra, was trying to land on the water at about 6:30 p.m. Monday when one of the floats bounced off a wave and the aircraft was flipped by a gust of wind.
Comfort and his passenger, 27-year-old Thad Rines, freed themselves from the single-engine Cessna 180 and were rescued by a good Samaritan boater and brought to shore in Hartland. Jackson says the men were mostly just cold from being in the water, and were treated at the scene.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection responded just in case there was a fuel leak.
