WELLS — Kennebunk scored seven runs against Wells Wednesday, and they were all of the unearned variety. But try telling the Rams that they didn’t earn them. Kennebunk mixed some sloppy Warriors defense with some aggressiveness on the basepaths in topping Wells 7-4 in a WMC softball game.

The Rams (2-5) twice rallied from deficits, as they scored a pair of runs in the fifth to go up 3-2 and put four more on the board in the top of the sixth after Wells (2-4) regained the lead.

The sixth inning was when the Rams took control of the game, with a little help from some out-of-control play by the Wells defense.

Haley Morias led off with a single, but Wells starting pitcher Ali Duplisea was able to get two quick outs on a strikeout and a sacrifice bunt. The Warriors nearly got out of the inning, but Gabby Harrison reached on a throwing error, allowing Morias to score from third. Harrison stole second, then scored on another throwing error off a grounder by Lindsey Gregoire.

Gregoire advanced to third on a wild pitch, then came home on an off-target pickoff throw by Wells catcher Sara Ring. Ally King scored the final run of the frame when Brittany Gregoire’s liner to left went between the legs of left fielder Hannah Moody.

“I think that you earn the runs by being aggressive,” said Kennebunk coach Kortney Nedeau. “You have to put the ball in play to even be able to have those mistakes happen, and to me it’s just as effective.”

Wells senior shortstop Maddie Taylor said the sixth inning was just another example of one of the Warriors’ ailments six games into the season.

“We’re a very good team but we have a lot of consistency issues. We have a lot of big innings that we let up, and if we can let down the errors on those, and keep any big innings from happening we’ll win a lot more games,” said Taylor.

The Rams also scored a single run in the third thanks to a dropped throw to first, which negated a second out and paved the way for a sacrifice fly, where another throwing error allowed Harrison to score.

Kennebunk plated its two runs in the fifth on two more errors, as Harrison and Lindsey Gregoire came home on consecutive at-bats.

“I think we showed our youth a little bit today, and that’s going to happen,” said Wells head coach Kevin Fox, who has six underclassmen on his roster. “We just need to learn from that and move in the right direction.”

The Warriors seized control of the game early, plating single runs in the second and third innings. Moody hit a two-out single to keep the second inning going, and Julianne Fitzpatrick followed with a single off King’s glove at first. Moody moved to third on the play, then with Casi Haye at the plate Moody and pinch runner Ally O’Brien worked a double steal, which scored Moody.

“One of our mentalities is just always trying to create scoring opportunities, and that’s running the bases smart and taking advantage of defensive relaxation ”¦ and knowing the situation and knowing how to take advantage of the situation,” said Fox.

Taylor led off the third with a single, stole second, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Duplisea. She scored on wild pitch from Meg Dube to put Wells up 2-0 early.

Taylor started a Wells rally in the bottom of the fifth with another lead-off hit ”“ a double to deep left. A bunt single by Duplisea put runners at the corners and a sacrifice fly by Ring brought Taylor home. Duplisea then scored on an RBI single by Sam Bogue.

Wells put runners on base in each of the first five innings, but with a three-run lead in hand Dube delivered her best inning of the game in the bottom of the sixth. She set down all three Warriors on grounders, then worked around a one-out throwing error in the seventh to close out the game.

“Meg, I think she got into a groove there. And once you’ve had a batter a couple times, you know how to throw them off-balance,” Nedeau said of Dube. “Meg really has been working hard on hitting her spots.”

Kennebunk has now won two straight after dropping its first five games. Nedeau said it’s a welcome winning streak after losing some close games among the first five outings.

“Today I think we really brought it all together, and they’re realizing to just slow down, one out at a time, one play at a time, taking care of the ball, and being aggressive on the basepaths and taking advantage of opportunities,” said Nedeau. “Now that we’re mended (together), I think we’re going to make the little improvements each game and just go up from here.”
