A fugitive who has been at large for four years was apprehended this week by state drug agents during a traffic stop in Bangor.

Alexander Mercado, 32, of Bronx, New York, had been a fugitive since 2011, when he failed to appear in court on drug trafficking charges, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, in a press release. The charges involved distribution of Oxycontin in Penobscot and Hancock counties.

McCausland said agents from the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency had been tracking Mercado for the past several weeks. Bangor police stopped a car that Mercado was riding in Tuesday evening. He was taken into custody without incident.

Drug agents seized more than $47,000 and a false Maine identification card issued to Mercado under an assumed name, said McCausland. As a result, he was also charged with forgery.

Bail on the warrant charging him with failure to appear on the drug trafficking charges was set at $300,000 property or $100,000 cash. Bail on the forgery charge was set at $25,000 cash. He is being held in the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor.
