MADRID (AP) — Spanish police say a man armed with a box cutter held a toddler hostage at a daycare center for about five hours before releasing the child unharmed and surrendering.
Civil guard spokeswoman Mercedes Martin says the unidentified man in his 50s tried to take more children and daycare center workers hostage when he entered the center Tuesday morning.
She says he ended up inside with only the 2-year-old boy, at the center in the town of Colmenar del Arroyo, about an hour’s drive from Madrid.
The man made demands to hostage negotiators and psychologists but Martin declined comment on what they were.
