SACO — The rematch of last year’s Western Class A boys lacrosse regional final had the same outcome, but this time around the game did go to overtime.

South Portland, which shocked Thornton Academy to win last year’s regional title in the closing seconds of regulation, beat the Trojans once again, as Chris Mitchell scored with three minutes left in overtime to push the Red Riots to an 8-7 victory at Hill Stadium in Saco.

South Portland (6-0) took the early momentum in the game, as the Red Riots reeled off three straight goals to surge ahead 4-1. Isaac Sinclair scored for Thornton (4-2) to cut the deficit to 4-2 at halftime.

South Portland pulled ahead 6-3 in the third quarter, but the Trojans tied the game up 6-6 heading into the fourth.

Sinclair put TA up 7-6 with 7:30 remaining, but the Red Riots were able to force overtime.

Mitchell’s game-winner completed a hat trick for the senior, and Lucas Michaud scored two goals for South Portland. Kam Andrews, Andrew Whipple and Jack Fiorini each had one goal for the Red Riots, and T-Moe Hellier made 12 saves in net.

Sinclair and Zach Bryant scored two goals apiece for the Trojans, while C.J. Michaud, Cam Cadorette, Justin Masteller and Jon Camire each had one. Chris Camire stopped 11 shots in net for TA.
