GRAY — Kennebunk jumped ahead early, then held on for a 7-5 victory over host Gray-New Gloucester (5-8) in a WMC baseball game Friday.
The Rams (9-5) scored all their runs in the first four innings of the game.
Justin Wiggins gave up eight hits over six innings to earn his second win of the season. Ben Lary pitched the seventh inning to close out the game.
Both Wiggins and Lary were repeat hitters, and Kip Richard had a two-run single in the fourth to lead the Kennebunk offense.
Softball
THORNTON 12, CHEVERUS 5
PORTLAND — Thornton Academy scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back, beating Cheverus 12-5 in an SMAA softball game Friday.
Barrett Campbell blasted a three-run home run, twin sister Hayden had a triple and a double as part of a three-hit day, and Maizie Lee and Bailey Tremblay also hit doubles for the Trojans (11-2), who had 16 hits in the game.
Tremblay pitched a three-hitter in the circle for Thornton, striking out eight batters and walking just one.
SANFORD 5, McAULEY 4, 8 innings
SANFORD — Host Sanford scored the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh, then won it in the bottom of the eighth as the Spartans edged McAuley 5-4 in an SMAA softball game Friday.
Jordan Wilson drove home Nicole Main with the winning run in the extra inning for Sanford (11-2). Main got into scoring position by blasting her third triple of the game, giving her three total hits for the contest.
Sanford led the Lions (5-9) 2-0 before McAuley put a four-spot on the board in the top of the sixth. The Spartans then scored single runs in each of the final three innings to rally back and win.
Jen Jones pitched a complete game for Sanford. She gave up four hits and two walks while striking out 10 McAuley batters.
Taylor Whaley took the loss for McAuley, as she gave up 11 hits while striking out six. Ally Tillotson and Anya Chase each drove in a run for the Lions.
Boys Tennis
THORNTON 4, MARSHWOOD 1
SOUTH BERWICK — Thornton Academy got a three-match sweep from its singles teams as it beat host Marshwood 4-1 in an SMAA boys tennis match Friday.
Victor Menezes (No. 1 singles), Vojtech Brtinsky (No. 2) and Jackson Dohse (No. 3) all won in straight sets for the Trojans, who improve to 11-0 with the win. TA’s No. 2 doubles team of Eric Gooch and Jared Waterhouse also won in straight sets.
The Hawks (2-9) got their lone win in No. 1 doubles, as Roger Connolly and Will Ramsay beat Dylan Gooch and Simon Belliveau 6-3, 1-6, 10-6.
PORTLAND 5, MASSABESIC 0
PORTLAND — Host Portland didn’t drop a set in any of the five matches in beating Massabesic 5-0 in an SMAA boys tennis match Friday.
Peter Gribizis swept Massabesic’s (3-8) Andrew Mongiat 6-0, 6-0 in No. 2 singles to lead the Bulldogs.
Kyle Duffy (No. 1 singles), Adam Marcotte (No. 3 singles), the No. 1 doubles team of Chase Berry and Garrett LaFrance and Austyn Pfeiffer and Xavier Lundrigan in No. 2 doubles also won games in their respective first sets before Portland won the second set 6-0 in each instance.
