As a retiree, it is very disturbing to read that Governor LePage’s proposed budget seeks to reduce, and eventually eliminate, income taxes, benefitting those with high incomes the most. The end result will be that local governments will be forced to increase our property taxes to make up the difference to pay for local services. The impact of property tax increases on retired persons on fixed incomes will be dreadful, forcing many of us into financial hardship. Trickledown economics does not help the retiree, and LePage’s trickledown budget is not a friend to us.
