BRUNSWICK
The high school tennis regular season has come to the end. Last Thursday, both the Brunswick boys and girls captured the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championships, with the Dragon boys earning a narrow 3-2 win over Mt. Ararat, and the Brunswick girls coming away with a 3-2 victory at Lewiston.
The Morse boys also picked up some hardware after downing Camden Hills, 3-2, in the KVAC Class B title match at Rockland.
Girls
The team tennis postseason is set to begin today, with the Wiscasset girls kicking things off in Western Maine Class C.
Sue Shorey’s return to the fold as head coach for a third time helped the Wolverines to an eighth seed. The reward for Wiscasset is a trip to Farmingdale at 4 p.m. against undefeated Hall-Dale (12-0). The teams met May 15 at Wiscasset, with the Bulldogs coming out on top, 4-1.
Winthrop (10-2), St. Dom’s (10-2) and North Yarmouth Academy (9-3) are seeds 2-4, respectively, and will host quarterfinal matchups. Carrabec (9-3), Boothbay (7-5) and Waynflete (5-7) are seeded 5-7.
The Brunswick girls, the threetime defending Eastern A Regional champs, are the No. 2 seed behind Lewiston, which went undefeated (12-0) and handed the Dragons their only loss (11-1) in the regular-season finale in a close 3-2 match.
Brunswick opens with No. 7 Skowhegan (6-6) in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 3 p.m. The Dragons downed Skowhegan, 4-1 on May 18.
The Blue Devils are slated to host No. 8 Bangor (4-8), while No. 4 Mt. Blue (9-3) faces No. 5 Brewer (8-4) in a quarterfinal.
Also, Sheila Bohlin’s Mt. Ararat Eagles, after a 6-6 regular season, are seeded sixth in Eastern A and will head to Hampden Academy, the No. 3 seed, on Thursday at 3 p.m. The Eagles fell to the Broncos (9-3), 4-1, on May 8.
In Western B, Barbara Boyce has her Morse Shipbuilders in the No. 5 spot after a solid 7-5 season. Three of those losses were by 3-2 scores. Morse travels to fourth-seeded Gardiner (9-3) for a quarterfinal on Wednesday at 4 p.m. The teams did not meet during the regular season.
Elsewhere in Western B quarterfinal play, No. 1 Lincoln Academy (12- 0) meets the survivor of a preliminary round match between No. 8 Maranacook (4-8) and No. 9 York (4- 8); No. 2 Greely (10-2) hosts either No. 7 Oak Hill (6-6) or No. 10 Lake Region (4-8); and No. 3 Cape Elizabeth entertains No. 6 Yarmouth (6-6).
Freeport (1-11) and Lisbon (1-11) missed out on the playoffs in Western B.
Boys
It has been quite a season so far for Brunswick, Mt. Ararat and Morse.
Beginning in Bath, the Shipbuilders have rode strong singles play to an 11-1 mark, the lone loss a 3-2 regular-season setback to Camden Hills on May 12.
Morse claimed the top seed in Western B and will meet eighthseeded Spruce Mountain (3-9) in the quarterfinals on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Shipbuilders downed the Phoenix on May 1, 5-0.
Elsewhere in Western B, No. 7 Greely (4-8) visits No. 2 Cape Elizabeth (9-3); sixth-seeded Yarmouth (8- 4) heads to third-seeded Fryeburg Academy (9-3); and No. 4 Lincoln Academy (6-6) takes on No. 5 Gardiner (8-4).
Brunswick and Mt. Ararat have met three times so far this season, including the KVAC title match on Thursday. The Dragons won the first and third matchups by a 3-2 scores, while the Eagles handed Brunswick its lone loss on May 15 in Topsham by the same 3-2 score.
The Dragons, the No. 1 seed in Eastern A, meets No. 8 Brewer (3-9) on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Brunswick, while the Eagles, seeded No. 2, entertains seventh-seeded Cony (6-6) on Thursday at 4 p.m. Brunswick downed the Witches, 5-0, on May 8, while Mt. Ararat, the defending Eastern A champs, finished its regular season with a 4-1 win over the Rams.
No. 3 Lewiston (9-3) takes on No. 6 Bangor (6-6), while No. 4 Hampden Academy (9-3) hosts fifth-seeded Mt. Blue (8-4).
Over in Western C, Chris Hammond returned to coach the Wolverines this year, with Wiscasset finishing 5-7 and gaining the No. 8 seed.
Wiscasset has a tough task in hand, traveling to No. 1 and undefeated Hall-Dale (12-0) for a quarterfinal match. The Bulldogs picked up a 5-0 win over the Wolverines on May 15.
Also in Western C, Waynflete, the No. 2 seed with an 11-1 mark, hosts No. 7 Madison (6-6); third-seeded Boothbay (11-1) takes on No. 6 Winthrop (7-5); and fourth-seeded Monmouth (8-4) meets up with No. 5 St. Dom’s (8-4).
Freeport (1-11) and Lisbon (0-12) failed to advance to the postseason in Western B.
