SOUTH BERWICK — Mary Booth Hildebrandt, 97, died peacefully on May 22, 2015, at home in South Berwick, Maine, surrounded by family and friends.

Mary was born March 1, 1918, in East Orange, New Jersey, the youngest of six children of George and Sarah Booth. She graduated from Orange High School in 1934. She attended Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1938.

She worked in New York City at New York University and at R.H. Macy, then as a billing clerk at a large corporation, New York Traprock. After a few months, she was promoted to secretary to the president, and worked there for eight years. During this time, Mary met Charles Hixon, of Glen Gardener, New Jersey, and they were married in July 1941. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943 and was sent overseas in January 1944. Shortly after, he died of pneumonia in a hospital in Glasgow, Scotland.

In the spring of 1948, Mary met Robert Carl Hildebrandt of Lansing, Michigan. They were married on Nov. 25, 1948, and enjoyed 61 years together. Their marriage was tender in many ways. Much of their lives revolved around their daughters and their families. They hosted several large family reunions at their home on Card Cove in Harpswell. They loved Bermuda and traveling to see family and friends. Both were devoted to their church and community and volunteered often. Bob died in March 2009 and Mary missed him very much.

Mary was a longtime member of the Unitarian- Universalist Church of Brunswick (Maine), and was active in the League of Women Voters, Midcoast Hunger Prevention, and the Sebascodegan Garden Club.

Mary and Bob and their family formerly resided in Moorestown and Montclair, New Jersey, Albany, Indiana, and Ravenna and Hudson, Ohio. When their daughters all migrated to New England, the couple moved to their most recent home in East Harpswell, Maine in 1981.

Mary will be remembered as a calm, kind, and compassionate woman, a good friend and a gifted listener. She was often ahead of her time, quietly and stoically upholding the principles of justice and peace, equal rights for all, and supporting those in need.

Mary is survived by four daughters: Laurie Waite Hildebrandt and her partner Paul Modern of West Fairlee, Vermont, Katharine (Kitsie) Booth Hildebrandt and her husband William Beazley of Orr’s Island, Maine, Marian (Mimi) Ware Demers and her husband Raymond of South Berwick, Maine, and Sarah (Sally) Hildebrandt and her husband James Sinkoff of Richmond, Massachusetts, eight grandchildren: Sarah Beazley, Willis Beazley and his wife Laura (Lori) Lommler, Tyson Demers and his wife Isabel Streichhahn-Demers, Lucy Mills and her husband Shaun-Michael, Caleb Demers, Molly Hildebrandt and her fiancée, Maciek Lewandowski, Noah Sinkoff, and Emma Sinkoff, and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 14, 2015, at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 15 Pleasant St., Brunswick, Maine.

Mary asked that any memorial contributions be made to Midcoast Hunger Prevention Program, 84A Union St., Brunswick, ME 04011, or the Unitarian Universalist Church of Brunswick, P.O. Box 129, Brunswick, ME 04011.
