Two drivers were taken to the hospital Friday afternoon after a vehicle struck another on Route 201 in Richmond, requiring the fire department to shut down the road for more than an hour and cut one driver from a car.

The two-vehicle crash happened shortly before 2:30 p.m. near 452 Brunswick Road (Route 201) in Richmond.

Richmond Police Sgt. Doug Bellevue said a 2008 Chrysler Sebring driven by Frederick “Lee” Glidden, 59, of Richmond, went into the back of a 2007 Audi I4 with used car dealer plates, driven by Patricia R. Jones, 52, who was pulling into her residence on Brunswick Road.

Jones took her foot off the brakes, which allowed the car roll quite a distance and helped absorb some of the impact. The Audi ended up in a car dealership parking lot at 454 Brunswick Road. Glidden’s car came to rest in the roadway and the air bags deployed. The Sebring was totaled.

Richmond, Bowdoin and Bowdoinham fire departments responded to help control traffic. It took several minutes to extricate Glidden from the Sebring. Brunswick Road was closed for about 90 minutes.

Bellevue said both drivers were transported to Mid Coast Hosptial in Brunswick by North East Mobile Health Services.
