Scarborough High School awarded 239 diplomas to seniors during its graduation ceremony on June 7 at Cross Insurance Arena in Portland. The following students rose to the top 10 percent in the class of 2015.

Acker.MeganMEGAN ACKER
She is the daughter of Sarah Nadeau and Ken Acker. Megan was the Co-President of Interact Club, a member for the Executive Committee of the State Youth Council of the UCC Churches of Maine, and a member of National Honor Society. She has participated in the One Act Plays and numerous productions at Portland Stage Company. Megan has also volunteered at Broadturn Farm Camp for six years. Honors and awards Megan has received in high school include Excellence in French, and a junior book award from Mt. Holyoke College. Megan will attend University of Mary Washington in the fall.

Bloom. Jacob 1JACOB BLOOM
He is the son of Alan and Lori Bloom. Jacob was a member of the National Honor Society and the Key Club. During all four years of high school, Jacob was a varsity track runner. He won the state title in the 4×800 meter race and his team won four state championship titles. Jacob also participated in cross country for two years where his team was state champion his senior year. Honors and awards that Jacob has received in high school include All-Academic Athlete Award, the RPI Book Award, and the Outstanding French Award. Jacob will be attending the University of Maine at Orono in the fall majoring in mechanical engineering.

Call.CatherineCATHERINE CALL
She is the daughter of Carol and Michael Call. Catherine has been a member of the Key Club and the National Honor Society. She participated for two years as a varsity swimmer. Catherine was a HOBY participant and attended the West Point Leadership program. Catherine will be attending Bowdoin College in the fall with plans to pursue a science degree and as a member of the swim team for the college.

DiBiase.IsabelleISABELLE DIBIASE
She is the daughter of Nicholas and Nicole DiBiase. Isabelle was a member of the Academic Decathlon team, winning four state championships and representing Maine at the national level. She participated in tennis and was named to the All-Academic teams for cross country and track. She is also a member of the Portland Fencing Club. Isabelle received the Oxford Book Award for earning a gold medal on the National Latin Exam all four years. She was also a recipient of the Cornell Book Award. Isabelle will be attending Colgate University where she plans to major in biology.

Ertman.MelissaMELISSA ERTMAN
She is the daughter of Jeff Ertman and Debra Fuchs-Ertman. For the past two years, Melissa was a member of the National Honor Society, the tennis team, and the Civil Rights Team, serving as Secretary this year. During all four years, she participated on the Academic Decathlon team receiving various individual medals at the state level, and for three years, attending the national competition. Since freshman year, she was a trombone player in the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, and this past year she sat first chair, as well as playing principal in the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra. She played trombone in the District I Honors Band all four years, and in the All-State Band for two. Melissa will be attending Smith College in the fall.

Gehrke.OliviaOLIVIA GEHRKE
She is the daughter of William and Lisa Gehrke. She was a member of the National Honor Society, French Club, ECOS Club, Interact Club and Model United Nations, serving as president her senior year. Olivia also participated in field hockey, softball, and alpine ski racing. She volunteered in SHS’s Functional Life Skills room during the summer and academic year. Olivia was a guitarist and songwriter in two rock bands during high school, and competed as a finalist in the 2014 MAMM Slam high school battle of the bands competition. She was a recipient of the College of the Atlantic Book Award, French Excellence Award, and Ceramics Excellence Award. Olivia will be attending Boston University.

Granzier.MichaelMICHAEL GRANZIER
He is the son of Mark and Tricia Granzier. He was a member of the National Honor Society, a member of Model United Nations, and a Key Club Board member. Last summer, he completed an internship at Maine Medical Center Research Institute. Michael participated in both the indoor and outdoor track programs over the course of his four years. In addition, he has been a member of the Portland Boxing Club for the past two years. Michael’s high school awards include three Gold Medals and one Silver Medal in the National Latin Exam, as well as the Rochester Institute of Technology Book Award for Creativity and Innovation in Math and Science. He will be attending Boston College in the fall.

Griffin.EmilyEMILY GRIFFIN
She is the daughter of Timothy and Carla Griffin. Emily was a member of the National Honor Society, Interact Club, and Model United Nations Club. During all four years of high school she participated in fencing through Portland Fencing Center and was First Team Academic All American. Emily spent over 200 hours volunteering in a classroom at Wentworth School. Emily will be attending Wheaton College in the fall.

Henny.LauraLAURA HENNY, Valedictorian
She is the daughter of Mary Wheeler and Roger Henny. She was a member of the Academic Decathlon team, attending nationals for all four years, and was the highest-scoring speech and interview student at Nationals 2015 in addition to winning 30 medals at the state level over four years. Laura was a four-year member of the varsity tennis team, first chair flute in the school band, Co-President of the Civil Rights Club, Girls State delegate, and a member of the National Honor Society. She was also awarded the National Merit Scholarship and the Harvard Book Award in addition to winning two state-wide writing contests, and she pursued her interest in social justice through an internship at the Maine People’s Alliance. Laura will be attending Brown University in the fall.

JENNIFER HERRMAN
She is the daughter of Lynne and Jeff Herrman. She served as class Secretary her sophomore and junior years and as President of the National Honor Society her senior year. During high school, Jennifer participated in mock-trial and tennis all four years, and was co-captain of both in her junior and senior years. In addition, she was selected to attend the HOBY Youth Leadership conference at both the state and national levels and to participate in Dirigo Girls State. Jennifer was a dedicated volunteer at both the Children’s Museum of Maine and Maine Medical Center. During high school, she received numerous academic awards, including the Yale Book Award. Jennifer plans to attend the University of Michigan in the fall.

Howard.NathanNATHAN HOWARD
He is the son of Frederick and Michele Howard. Nathan was the class president for three years, a varsity athlete for four years, and part of the National Honor Society. He was captain of the swim team in his junior and senior years and captain of the lacrosse team in his senior year. Nathan received the Rochester Institute of Technology Book Award as a junior and achieved high honors or honors every semester. Nathan has accepted an appointment to the United States Naval Academy.

ANDREW JONES
He is the son of Lee and KC Jones. While at Scarborough High Andrew played basketball, soccer, and fenced at the Portland Fencing Center. He received the Dartmouth College Book Award and medals for scoring well on the National Latin Examination. Andrew will enter the Honors College at the University of Maine and study engineering.

 

Kostovick.AndreaANDREA KOSTOVICK
She is the daughter of Frank and Nancy Kostovick. Andrea was a member of the National Honor Society, the One Act Drama Team, and the publicist for the Storm for a Cure Club. She has traveled New England advocating for youth empowerment programs and has performed in many community theater productions, local films, and television commercials. As a junior Andrea received the Brandeis Book Award for Social Justice and Civic Engagement. Andrea will be attending Emerson College to study marketing.

Maloney.KristinKRISTIN MALONEY
She is the daughter of Brian and Sandra Maloney. Kristin was a member of Interact Club, Key Club, and the National Honor Society. During all four years of high school, she participated in Scarborough’s volleyball program, both playing on the team and coaching young players. She received the Rochester Institute of Technology Computing Medal her junior year, and was SMAA 2014 Volleyball All Conference Second Team. Kristin will be attending Boston College in the fall.

Maroon.Rachel 1RACHEL MAROON
She is the daughter of Mark and Terry Maroon. Rachel was a founder and president of the SHS Bible Study as well as a member of the National Honor Society. During her last three years of high school she participated in the girls’ ice hockey program, and throughout all of high school has been involved in either Key Club, Interact Club, and Storm for a Cure. Rachel has been very active in her church throughout her high school years, participating in the youth group, playing keyboard in the worship band, and teaching Sunday School. Her most rewarding experience has been participating in mission trips to an orphanage in Nicaragua over the past two years. Rachel will be attending Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, in the fall.

Morin. TrevorTREVOR MORIN
He is the son of Peter and Nancy Morin. Trevor was the President of the Senior Class, a member of the National Honor Society, and was a Yearbook Editor. During his junior and senior year, Trevor served as the manager for the Varsity Field Hockey team which went on to win the Class A State Championship this past fall. Trevor also volunteered at the Maine Veterans Home and at Maine Medical Center as a Junior Volunteer. Honors and awards that Trevor has received in high school include Outstanding French Student (2012), Most Enthusiastic in Biology (2013), National Latin I Exam Silver Medalist (2014), and the St. Michael’s College Book Award (2014). Trevor will be attending the University of Maine in the fall and plans on majoring in biochemistry on the pre-med track.

Murray.KristenKRISTEN MURRAY
She is the daughter of Jeff and Claudia Murray. Kristen has been Treasurer of the Class of 2015 for four years, a member of the National Honor Society and a Natural Helper. She played field hockey and ice hockey all four years and was named captain in both sports during her senior year; she was also named to the All-State teams for both sports. Kristen received the Smith College Book Award and the AP Scholar with Honor Award. She will be attending the University of Pennsylvania in the fall, and is enrolled in their five-year honors program in both nursing and business.

Ofiara.LauraLAURA OFIARA
She is the daughter of Robin Merle and Douglas Ofiara. She was a member of the Interact Club for three years, the French Club, and played alto sax throughout her high school career, including two years in Wind Ensemble. Some of the honors that Laura received include the University of Rochester George Eastman Young Leaders Award, Outstanding Achievement in Chemistry, and Outstanding Achievement in French IV. Laura will be attending The George Washington University in the fall.

Rathmell.AndrewANDREW RATHMELL
He is the son of Mark and Karina Rathmell. Andrew was a member of the National Honor Society, Writing Club, and Anime Club. Throughout all four years of high school he was involved in Environmental Club of Scarborough (ECOS), becoming Treasurer his junior year and then President his senior year. In his junior year, Andrew was awarded the Xerox Award for Innovation and Information Technology and recognized as the Most Outstanding 11th Grade Social Studies Student. He has also won various percussion awards in the Scarborough High School Band all four years. Andrew will be attending Brandeis University in the fall.

Savage.KaylaKAYLA SAVAGE
She is the daughter of Carlton Savage, Chantal Savage-Levesque and her husband, Mark. During all four years of high school Kayla participated in the volleyball program earning her varsity letter sophomore year. She served as captain of the volleyball team her senior year. Honors and awards that Kayla has received in high school include academic honor roll for eight semesters and excellence in art. Kayla will be attending the University of Tampa in the fall.

Shell.ElizabethELIZABETH SHELL
She is the daughter of Kimberly Hamilton and Eric Shell. Lizzie discovered her true passions of animals and the outdoors at a young age. She began training and competing with her dogs in agility at age 10. Lizzie is an avid runner, having competed in several half-marathons. When not competing with her dogs or running, she can usually be found heading to New Hampshire to hike in the White Mountains. Lizzie will be attending the University of New Hampshire as a biomedical sciences/medical & veterinary sciences major in the fall.

Towse.AlexALEC TOWSE, Salutatorian
He is the son of Kelly and Matt Towse. Alec was a member of the National Honor Society, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo and Wind Ensemble. He was selected for the District Honors Jazz Band all four years of high school and was also selected for the All-State Jazz Festival his junior and senior years. For the past nine years, Alec has volunteered at the Pine Point Nursing Facility and Scarborough Terrace as part of St. Max’s outreach ministry. Honors include the AP Scholar Award, three Outstanding Musicianship Awards at the UNH Jazz Festival, Outstanding Achievement in Spanish III and AP Spanish, and the Williams College Book Award. Alec will be attending Northeastern University and is planning to major in engineering. He will study abroad this fall in Melbourne, Australia.

Terry.JacobJACOB TERRY
He is the son of Scott and Julie Terry. During all four years of high school Jacob has participated in the cross country and track programs, serving as co-captain of the cross country team his junior and senior years. Jacob has received the Clarkson University Book Award for leadership, earned honor-roll all four years, and was part of the Key Club. Jacob is a two-time Class A Indoor Track State Champion in the two mile. Jacob will be attending the University of Maine in the fall and plans to study engineering.

Tirrell.EmmaEMMA TIRRELL
She is the daughter of Eric and Kathy Tirrell. Emma participated in the volleyball program for three years of high school and served as a captain her senior year. As a sophomore, Emma received the school-wide Sophomore Civics/Economics award and as a junior received a book award from Clarkson University. She also earned a spot in the senior state-wide volleyball showcase and was recognized on the second All State team. Emma will be attending Saint Joseph’s College in the fall, majoring in exercise science.

Young.MelissaMELISSA YOUNG
She is the daughter of Brian and Julianne Young. Melissa was a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club. She received the Phi Beta Kappa book award her junior year, and was a silver medalist for the National Latin Exam her senior year. Melissa achieved High Honor Roll throughout all four years of high school. She will be attending Saint Anselm College in the fall. Melissa will be majoring in biology and hopes to continue on to medical school.
