BRUNSWICK

It seems like it just started, but the high school baseball regular season ended on Thursday. The playoff field is set, with several area teams looking to find the magic.

In Eastern A, Brunswick, which closed with a dominating 8-1 win over Oxford Hills on Wednesday, is the No. 8 seed and will host ninth-seeded Lewiston (5-11) on Tuesday at 4 p.m., in a preliminary matchup. The teams split their two matchups during the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference season, with the Dragons winning at home, 6- 1, on April 29 and falling in walk-off fashion at Lewiston, 5-4, on May 29. The Blue Devils won three of their final five games.

The winner travels to topseeded Bangor (14-2) for a quarterfinal contest. Other quarterfinal matchups in Eastern A are No. 7 Mt. Blue (7-9) at No. 2 Edward Little (12-4); third-seeded Brewer (12-4) entertaining No. 6 Cony (8-8); and No. 5 Oxford Hills (9-7) traveling to No. 4 Messalonskee (13-3).

Over in Western B, both the Morse and Freeport squads will host prelim games. The Falcons claimed the No. 7 seed, closing the regular season on a fourgame winning streak while allowing just one total run in those contests. Freeport will entertain Western Maine Conference rival and No. 10 Gray-New Gloucester, a team they beat on Wednesday, 3-0. Freeport also downed the Patriots (7-9) at Gray on May 13, 4-2.

Morse had an up-anddown season, going 4-6 in games decided by three runs or less. The Shipbuilders finished 7-9 for the No. 8 seed and will host ninth-ranked Lake Region (5-11). Playing in different conferences, the Shipbuilders in the KVAC and the Lakers in the WMC, the teams did not meet during the regular season.

Cape Elizabeth (11-5) is the top seed in Western B and will host the winner of the Morse/Lake Region contest, while York (12-4) is seeded second and will be at home against the Freeport/Gray- NG victor in the quarterfinals. Also in quarterfinal play, third-seeded Greely (11- 5) hosts No. 6 Yarmouth (8-8) and No. 5 Lincoln Academy (7-9) visits No. 4 Wells (10-6).

Western C has 12 teams in the playoff fold. In prelim play, No. 12 Mountain Valley (7-9) heads to No. 5 Maranacook (9-7); No. 11 Carrabec (7-9) visits No. 6 Monmouth (9-7); 10th-seeded Traip Academy (9-7) makes the long drive from Kittery to Farmingdale to meet No. 7 Hall-Dale (11-5); and eighthseeded St. Dom’s (11-5) is home against No. 9 Madison (8-8).

In quarterfinal play, Lisbon, after a solid 13-3 regular season, is the No. 4 seed and will host either Maranacook or Mountain Valley. The Greyhounds defeated the Falcons twice, 2-1 at home on April 29, and 10-0 at Rumford on Thursday. Lisbon did not face Maranacook.

Dirigo (15-1), Winthrop (14-2) and Sacopee Valley (15- 1) are the top three seeds, respectively, in Western C.

Richmond (13-3) claimed the top spot in Western D for the second straight year, dominating the East-West Conference. The Bobcats will host No. 8 Forest Hills (7-9) in the quarterfinals, a team Richmond handled in a doubleheader sweep on May 16, 7-6 and 15-5.

Wiscasset also made the Western D field as the No. 7 seed after a 5-11 heavilyloaded Western C slate. The Wolverines face second-seeded Searsport in the quarterfinals.

Last season, Wiscasset swept Valley, Richmond and Buckfield in Western D to advance to the State Class D title game, falling to Bangor Christian at Bangor in eight innings.

Wiscasset and Searsport did not meet in the regular season, but Searsport (11-3) picked up an impressive 3-0 win over Richmond on May 26.

Elsewhere in Western D, third-seeded Buckfield (11-5) hosts No. 6 Rangeley (3-8), while No. 4 Greenville is home against No. 5 Valley (7- 6) in the quarterfinals.
