AUGUSTA (AP) — Democratic U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree is calling on the Department of Veterans Affairs to ensure the firefighters that work for the department get back pay that they are owed.
Pingree says the VA has recently agreed to pay firefighters a premium per-hour rate on Saturdays and to retroactively pay them for time they worked back to 2004. But the firefighters still haven’t received that pay due to a technical glitch in the system.
Pingree and a group of other lawmaker sent a letter to VA Secretary Bob McDonald last week urging it to resolve the issue, which is impacting firefighters at Maine’s Togus VA Medical Center and across the country.
Pingree says 13 firefighters at Togus are eligible for the retroactive pay.
