SACO — A nearly $34 million school budget was approved 365-163.
The school budget has been estimated to increase the mil rate by 50 cents. The municipal budget, which was approved by the city council last month, will raise the mil rate by 10 cents.
A 60 cent increase in the mil rate raises annual taxes on a $200,000 home by $120.
The combined $53.7 million city and school budget will bring the mil rate up to $19.22.
The budget received support from local tax watchdog group Saco Citizens for Sensible Government.
“We believe it is the responsible course to accept the proposed budget that essentially holds the line on expenses while paying the mandatory new costs associated with Thornton Academy,” said Saco Citizens for Sensible Government Chairman Scott Thibeau in a recent letter to the editor.
