PORTLAND (AP) — Interstate fishing regulators are meeting to discuss how to manage the future of the shuttered Northern shrimp fishery.

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Northern Shrimp Advisory Panel and Section meets today to review public comments about the fishery and consider options for its future. Regulators are working on an amendment about the fishery that focuses on the development of a limited entry fishing program.

Regulators shut down the Gulf of Maine shrimp fishery in December 2013 over concerns about population levels. Scientists say warming waters in the gulf are a concern for the shrimp stock.

Most New England fishermen who harvest Northern shrimp are located in Maine. There are also a few in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
