A Fairfield man was ejected through the sunroof of a Land Rover and died following a single-car crash on the Maine Turnpike northbound in New Gloucester on Saturday, state police said.

Anthony Vandyck, 40, was a passenger in the vehicle. He was not wearing his seatbelt when the driver of the car, Derek Knowles, 35, of Skowhegan, lost control on a straight stretch of highway at 1 p.m. Saturday. The car hit the median guardrail, rolled over and went down an embankment, police said.

Knowles has a suspended license because of multiple violations, police said. He was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries, then arrested on outstanding warrants and taken to Androscoggin County Jail, police said.

Troopers will meet with a prosecutor from the District Attorney’s Office to determine what additional charges will be filed against Knowles in connection with the crash.
