SACO — Mary Elizabeth Blunt of Saco passed away peacefully in her sleep of congestive heart failure on June 14, 2015 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

She was born in Rochester, New Hampshire, March 20, 1926, daughter of Sterling L. Libby and Katherine E. Doherty. She resided in Saco, graduating from Thornton Academy in 1946. Mary attended nursing school and served as an LPN for many years at Trull/Webber Hospital/Southern Maine Health Care until her retirement.

Mary married John C. Blunt, her brother Sterling Libby’s best friend, and they eloped after a three week whirlwind romance while John was on leave from the Navy in 1947. They shared a role model marriage and friendship for 63 years until John’s death in 2010.

She is survived by: two of her sons and their wives, John S. Blunt and his wife Carolyn (Allen) Blunt, and Charles R. Blunt and his wife Debbie (Tapscott) Blunt; her brother, Russell Libby of Texas; as well as an extended family with seven grandchildren, Cathy (Blunt) Dexter, Robert Blunt and his wife Brie (Braley) Blunt, Jillian Blunt, Kyle Blunt, Wendy Darling and two granddaughters in Texas, Tonya and Becky; 11 great-grandchildren, Courtney and Madison Dexter, Ella, Asa and Rian Blunt, and including 6 great-grandchildren from Texas; dozens of nieces and nephews; and many lifelong friends.

She is preceded in death by: her middle son, Chester A. Blunt in 2009; and her beloved husband, John “John John” C. Blunt; and brother, Sterling and his wife, Marion Libby of Illinois and Old Orchard Beach.

She will be remembered as a devoted, loving, compassionate and caring woman who loved her family, friends and her country. She enjoyed knitting, walking, gardening, kittens and anything patriotic. She was a long time member of the Trinity Episcopal Church and their ECW women’s group.

Visiting hours will be Tuesday, June 16 in Saco at Dennett, Craig and Pate on from 5-7 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 17 at 10 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church in Saco. Following the church service will be a short prayer at Saco’s Laurel Hill Cemetery followed by a mercy meal back at Trinity Episcopal Church for family and friends at noon.
