The Boston Red Sox have been living in the basement for much of this season and currently sit in last place in the American League East with a 31-40 record.

After a particularly rough recent loss longtime fan and horror writer Stephen King told Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy the basement may be too high for the way the Sox have played.

Shaughnessy included the email conversation in a column:

Shaughnessy: “How ‘bout them Sox?”

King: “The Sox hit bottom. Then, last night, they discovered the basement BELOW the bottom.’’

Shaughnessy: “Can I use your basement joke in a notes column?’’

King: “Sure. But, I, um, wasn’t really joking.”

The Red Sox begin a three-game series against Baltimore at Fenway Park at 7:10 p.m. Tuesday. They’re seven games behind first-place Tampa Bay in the AL East standings.
