MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — The African Union mission in Somalia says that one of their bases in Somalia has been attacked by Islamic militants.
The tweet from the mission confirmed the attack started this morning at their remote outpost in Lego, Somalia.
A local official told The Associated Press by telephone that militants attacked the base entrance with a suicide car bomb before gunmen began their assault.
“They managed to infiltrate the entrance after the blast — it was a complex attack,” said Mohammed Haji, an official in the Lower Shabelle region. He estimated that many people had been killed.
The Al-Qaeda linked Al- Shabab group claimed the responsibility for the attack. The group vowed it would step up attacks during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
