Fifteen years ago, John Swinconeck got his start in the newspaper business as a freelance writer — for The Times Record.
Starting Monday, June 29, he will lead the newspaper as managing editor, having spent a little more than the past year serving as a reporter for The Times Record.
“I’m excited for John to take on this role, as his passion for the business and the Mid-coast region has impressed me during the last year,” said outgoing Managing Editor Rob Montana. “The quality of his reporting is excellent, surpassed only by his commitment to community journalism and telling the stories of the people here.
“I look forward to watching John in this role and am confident he will do an excellent job,” he added.
A search conducted by Times Record Publisher Michelle Lester drew wide interest and generated a large pool of applicants.
“We had a number of well-qualified candidates that were attracted to the community focus of the newspaper, as well as to this great area,” said Lester. “Ultimately, it came down to which candidate could and would serve the interests of our readers best, and John emerged head and shoulders above the rest with his wellearned reputation in the communities we serve.
“Without missing a beat, John will be able to continue the legacy of community commitment demonstrated so well by Rob Montana during his tenure,” she added.
Swinconeck’s experience includes the York County Coast Star in Kennebunk, the Journal Tribune in Biddeford and The Daily Voice in Grafton, Massachusetts. He was a correspondent for a number of print and online news outlets in Massachusetts, including The Boston Globe and Boston.com before returning to Maine in 2014 to cover Brunswick and Freeport for The Times Record.
“I am excited to continue the direction that Rob has set in making The Times Record the best source for community news in the Brunswick area,” said Swinconeck.
When not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife and children.
