A Raymond man died Sunday evening at a Boston hospital, a day after he was burned when he fell into his backyard fire pit, according to state officials.

Timothy W. Small, 52, fell into the fire pit early Saturday morning and was burned over 60 percent of his body, but initially refused medical attention, according to a statement from the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Investigators said Small was drinking with friends around his rock-lined fire pit Friday night, but was alone around 2 a.m. Saturday when he fell into the fire. Small managed to “stagger” home, refused medical attention and went to bed, according to officials. Friends staying in the home called an ambulance a few hours later.

Small was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, then transferred to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
