PORTLAND (AP) — The school board in Maine’s largest city will not rush to fill the position that will become vacant when the current superintendent leaves for a new job in Kentucky.

The Portland school board is holding a closed meeting on Tuesday to discuss the departure of Emmanuel Caulk. Caulk is leaving to become school superintendent for the Fayette County Public Schools system in Kentucky.

School board chairwoman Sarah Thompson says the board will set a timeline for a superintendent search. She also says she believes the board should appoint an interim superintendent for a year while launching a nationwide search for a permanent replacement.

Caulk became superintendent of the approximately 7,000-student-student Portland Public Schools system in July 2012. The coming search will be the district’s third superintendent search in nine years.
