A Windham man was sentenced Wednesday to three months in prison on charges of mail fraud and identity theft.

Manuel J. Arruda, 46, of Windham, was sentenced in U.S. District Court by Judge Jon D. Levy to three months in prison and two years of supervised release for mail and access device fraud and identity theft. He was also ordered to pay $11,962.85 in restitution.

Arruda pleaded guilty to the charges on February 20, 2015.

According to court documents, Arruda applied online in March 2012 for a Chase Bank Freedom credit card in someone else’s name, using the person’s name, date of birth and Social Security number which he had obtained in his position as service manager at a car dealership in Portland. The fraud victim had brought his truck in to the dealership for service.

Chase Bank approved the application and mailed two credit cards to Arruda, who used the cards between March and December 2012 to make $12,000 worth of purchases, acquire over $2,300 in cash advances and make payments of about $1,200. He also received about $350 in credits.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
