Mere Creek to host junior golf camps

BRUNSWICK — Mere Creek Golf Course will be hosting its first Summer Junior Golf Camp of the year, taking place on July 13-14.

The mission for the camps is to provide a fun, positive environment so that young golfers have a place to learn and improve their skills through instruction, practice, and a variety of health conscious games and activities.

Mere Creek is committed to growing junior golf in the Brunswick area by bringing excitement to the kids and their overall enjoyment of the game.

The camps are open for players ages 8-16. The July camp cost has been reduced to $100, while the August camp costs $150. Both camps are payable by either cash or check. Those wishing to participate in both camps will pay $225. Also, instructor Kevin Joseph said there is a sibling/family special.

The camp has a maximum participation of 40 students with a student-to-teacher ration of 5-to-1. Students should arrive at 9:30 a.m., with activities beginning at 10 a.m. on both days. The first day will finish up at 2 p.m., with July 14th ending at 2:30 p.m.

It is preferred that players bring their own clubs, but Mere Creek can accommodate if given advanced notice.

Activities will be slightly different than in years past, with a focus on a more fun approach that young players will find more appealing. Instruction will provided for all attendees, along with a series of golf-related games, team competitions and exercises that will engage the participants.

There will be a strong focus on the fundamentals and knowledge of the game, while the camp emphasis will center around putting, chipping, pitching, bunker and full swing. It will also include instruction based around posture, grip, swing and alignment. Also, general knowledge of the rules, etiquette, golf course and history of the game will be included in the lesson plan.

Lunch and snacks will be provided, with an emphasis put on healthy food and drinks this year to coincide with the camp initiative and activities.

Mere Creek is also looking for several camp counselors to help out. High school upperclassmen or college students in need of community service hours, which will account to about 10 hours, are welcome.
