Described as the largest annual gathering of traditional schooners in the country, the Great Schooner Race hosted by the Maine Windjammer Association brought 14 of the vessels to Rockland on Friday. The ships raced across Penobscot Bay from Gilkey Harbor to Rockland. The overall winner of the Great Schooner Race was the Stephen Taber, a 68-footer that was built in 1871 and is based in Rockland. The Rockport-based Heron won the “Windward” class; the Camden-based Angelique won the “Leeward” class; and the Rockland-based Victory Chimes won the “Coaster” class.
