OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The Old Orchard Beach Surge (5-14) were defeated by the Newburgh Newts (9-9) on Thursday night at The Ballpark with a final score of 3-1.
The Newts took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Kenny Kirshner started things off with a leadoff double. Pat Kregeloh followed him with an RBI double. A passed ball would give the Newts a 2-0 lead. Catcher Nick Lancisi would knock in the third run with sacrifice fly.
The rest of the game would be a pitchers duel with Surge starter Eddie Medina going for eight strong innings, giving up just four hits, walking two, and striking out eight. Ron Schreurs would toss a scoreless ninth for OOB.
The Surge would score their lone run of the game in the ninth inning with a single from second baseman Chris Ray. An error would allow him to take third base and Joe Coyne, continuing with his hot bat, would send him home with a groundout RBI.
The next Surge home game is on Saturday at noon against the Road City Explorers. The first 250 fans will receive free admission to the game courtesy of Emerson Chevrolet Buick.
The Surge will be hosting a meet-and-greet tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. in the OOB town square. The team will be taking pictures, signing autographs and handing out schedules. Members of the team will also take their chances in a dunk tank.
