Police say a two-car collision at the intersection of Routes 201 and 197 in Richmond late Sunday morning occurred after one of the drivers failed to stop at a stop sign.
The crash was reported Sunday at 11:40 a.m. Patrol officer Chris Giles said Alphonse Veilleux, 77, of Lewiston was traveling on Route 197 in a 2008 Chevy Malibu and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection. Veilleux apparently drove through the intersection and struck a Ford Edge traveling north on Route 201 driven by Patricia Edger, 55, of Bowdoin.
The Ford Edge spun around and came to rest in the roadway but after impact, the Malibu careened off the road and ended up a ditch, said Giles.
Veilleux’s passenger, Claudette Lemay, 68, was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extracted by firefighters on scene. She was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with various injuries. Veilleux was also taken to CMMC.
Edger was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.
Giles said air bags deployed in both vehicles, which were total losses.
Richmond’s police and fire departments responded as did Bowdoin and Bowdoinham fire departments, Gardiner Rescue and North East Mobile Health Services. The intersection had to be closed down for about 40 minutes and Giles said the Maine Department of Transportation came and cleaned up the chemicals that had spilled onto the road from the vehicles.
Giles said charges could be pending against Veilleux.
