CARIBOU (AP) — Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King of Maine say the Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery in Caribou will receive $861,232 from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
They say the grant is critical to providing continued service for 7,795 veterans and their families in northern Maine.
They say the closest national veterans’ cemetery is more than 450 miles away in Bourne, Massachusetts, and the closest state veterans’ cemetery is nearly 250 miles away in Augusta.
The grant will fund the development of approximately one acre including the construction of an access drive, crypts, columbaria, landscaping and supporting infrastructure.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
