AUGUSTA (AP) — A New York City man has been sentenced to six years in prison for smuggling more than 200 oxycodone pills into Maine.

Rafael Jesus Brito was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty last month to aggravated trafficking in oxycodone.

Maine Drug Enforcement Agency officers, acting on a tip, arrested the 28-year-old Brito as he got off a bus in Augusta in February. Prosecutors say the street value of the drugs was more than $12,000.

Brito’s attorney, Stephen Bourget, asked for a lighter sentence.

Bourget said Brito had earned a GED certificate in jail and had been trained and worked in New York as a barber until the shop closed abruptly and he lost his job. He described transporting drugs as “a moment of weakness.”
