OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The Old Orchard Beach Surge (11-17) were defeated by the Newburgh Newts (15-11) by a final score of 7-2 Thursday night at The Ballpark.

The Surge bats were active early, with back-to-back singles from Tyler Krobetzky and Joe Coyne in the second inning. Chris Ray picked up an RBI with a double, giving the Surge a 1-0 lead.

The Newts took a 3-1 lead in the third, with Maine native Nick Grady and Kevin Putkonen each picking up RBIs.

Newburgh added to its lead in the fourth, taking a 5-1 lead on a two-run single from Gevon Jackson. That ended the night for Surge starter Tyler Levine. James Scagnelli took over on the mound in relief.

Levine finished with three innings pitched, allowing six runs on six hits, while walking five and striking out one.

A wild pitch in the third gave the Newts a 6-1 lead.

Will Benenson led off the fifth with a solo home run, cutting the Newts lead to 6-2. Tucker White picked up his 10th double of the season, but was left stranded on base.

Newly acquired pitcher and former University of Maine standout Tommy Lawrence took over the mound for Scagnelli in the sixth. Scagnelli lasted two innings, giving up no hits.

Lawrence ended his debut after two innings, giving up one hit and one run, while striking out one.
