Several funnel clouds, which are typically associated with the formation of tornadoes, were spotted in the lower midcoast region Monday evening, but the National Weather Service in Gray says there is no cause for concern.

Meteorologist Margaret Curtis said a tornado touches land. Funnel clouds stay suspended over the land and do not touch down.

Several people in the towns of Lisbon, Topsham and Brunswick reported seeing the funnel clouds around 5 p.m. and notified the National Weather Service.

“There is no cause for concern, but it’s certainly an interesting weather (phenomenon),” Curtis said.
