AUGUSTA (AP) — A South Portland man who brawled with a state trooper during a traffic stop has been sentenced to two years behind bars.
The Kennebec Journal reports that Andre Hicks Jr. was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to assault on an officer and unlawful possession of heroin.
Prosecutors say the 27-year-old Hicks was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over for speeding on Interstate 295 in Gardiner in May.
The trooper who made the stop smelled marijuana and had the driver and Hicks exit the car for a drug search.
Hicks then lowered his shoulder and ran at the trooper, pushing him into a travel lane. Hicks was subdued by the trooper and two passing motorists who stopped to help.
Hicks’ attorney said his client wished to accept responsibility.
