NORTH BERWICK — Dana Estes II, age 86, of Keedysville, Maryland, passed away peacefully July 20, 2015 at his home after a period of declining health.

He was born in Brookline, Massachu-setts on Sept. 17, 1928, a son of Frederick M. and Dorris E. (Leland) Estes. Dana earned his Bachelor’s degree at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland; a Bachelor’s degree in physics at U.S. Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, California; and Bachelor’s degree in education at the University of Maine, Farmington.

Dana retired Sept. 30, 1971 as a Commander in the U.S. Navy, serving in Korea and Vietnam; he completed several tours of duty as a line officer in destroyers, cruisers, aircraft carriers, amphibious cargo ships and fleet oilers. Shore duty included U.S. Navy postgraduate school in Monterey, California and the U.S. Nuclear Test Task Force in Washington, D.C., and on Christmas and Johnston Islands in the Pacific. He spent a year in Vietnam in the U.S. Coastal Surveillance Force and was a senior advisor to Vietnamese Navy in II Corps.

After retirement he worked for Maine National Bank in Portland; Green Mountain Furniture, Inc. of North Bennington, Vermont; Pentucket High School in West Newbury, Massachusetts as a math teacher; Mediplex Nursing Home in Beverly, Massachusetts; Gloucester, Massachusetts public schools as a substitute math and English teacher; Bailey’s Service Station in Manchester by the Sea, Massachusetts; and Washington County, Maryland high schools as a substitute math teacher.

Throughout his extensive career, Dana held his family as the most important thing in life. He loved spending as much time as possible with his 13 children. He had many fond memories of his summer trips to the Maine woods, where he truly enjoyed the peacefulness of camping and fly fishing.

He is preceded in death by: two sons, Dana Estes III, and James T. Estes; great-granddaughter, Natalie Rose Crocker; and his brother, Commander Leland F. Estes.

He is survived by: seven sons, Frederick H. Estes of Newfield, John L. Estes of Weehawken, New Jersey, Norman R. Estes of Biddeford, Kenneth A. Estes of South Berwick, Charles R. Estes and David B. Estes, both of Wells, and Benjamin N. Estes of Keedysville, Maryland; four daughters, Hazel (Estes) Levasseur of Sanford, Ruth (Estes) Libby of Phippsburg, Lucille E. Estes of Sanford, and Loretta (Estes) Carey of Somersworth, New Hampshire; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Calling Hours will be held Saturday, July 25 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Johnson Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick, ME, where a funeral service will be held at noon. Interment with military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery, North Berwick, ME.
