PORTLAND
A Portland man who faces an array of state and federal charges was arrested Thursday afternoon after a foot chase near the University of Southern Maine.
Jimmy Odong, 25, was charged with robbery in connection with the carjacking of a woman on Baxter Boulevard on July 17. He also was charged by the FBI with bank robbery in connection with a robbery of Key Bank in Freeport, also on July 17.
Odong was free on bail for a domestic violence aggravated assault charge that originated in February. He now faces a charge of violating conditions of release.
Odong was taken into custody after allegedly fleeing from detectives just after 4 p.m. Thursday.
According to a press re- lease, Odong fled from detectives in the USM area but was boxed in by Portland and USM officers. A police dog from South Portland allegedly tracked Odong to some bushes near Sullivan Gym on Falmouth Street.
He fled for a second time but was taken into custody minutes later on Granite Street, according to the press release.
The July 17 bank robbery happened shortly after two incidents in Portland. The first involved an armed man approaching a man sitting in his vehicle and demanding his phone, though the armed man allegedly fled on foot without the phone. In the second incident, a woman was sitting in her car at the Seaside Nursing Home and was approached by a man who allegedly pointed a gun at her and ordered her out of the car. The man allegedly stole her silver 2004 Honda Pilot.
Police have said that they believe the three robberies were related. The robber at all three locations was described as a black man in dark clothing and who was about 20 years old and 5 feet 10 inches tall. The suspect in the bank heist was seen leaving in a silver sport utility vehicle similar to the Pilot stolen in Portland.
