OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The Old Orchard Beach Surge (16-21) defeated the Newburgh Newts (22-14) on Sunday afternoon at The Ballpark.

The game remained scoreless until the third inning with the Surge taking a 1-0 lead. Richard Colla made it on base with a single and was sent home off a knock from center fielder Bryan White.

The Surge picked up another run in the fourth, this time off a solo bomb to deep left field from right fielder Carlos Valdez.

The Newts would take a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning with Pat Kregoloh, Kevin Putkonen, and Maine native Nick Grady each picking up an RBI.

Newburgh had a chance to expand their lead in the sixth, but a highlight-reel worthy diving grab from Bryan White in center ended the inning and kept the Surge within one run.

Jairo Gomez took over the mound in the seventh, ending the day for Surge starter Tyler Levine. Levine ended the night with six hits, three runs, three walks, and one strikeout.

The Surge tied the game in the seventh, with Valdez leading off with a double. He would reach home on a single from Jamiel Orozco.

Dustin Stanton would come in to close out the game in ninth. Gomez went for two innings, allowing no hits and striking out one. Stanton would end the night allowing no hits, one run, walking two and striking out one.

The ninth was an exciting one with Newburgh taking a 4-3 lead after a passed ball allowed a run to score.

But the boys in blue were determined to again rally back, with an RBI double from Orozco tying the game 4-4. Third baseman Yunior Estrella would end the game with a walk off hit, sending Orozco home to end the game, 5-4.

The Surge outhit the Newts 9-6 with Carlos Valdez and Jamiel Orozco leading the team with two each. Orozco also led the team with two RBIs.

The Surge take on the Newts again tonight at 7 p.m.
